A Spa in Surrey contacted us as they had recently faced two minor slip incidents, one in the shower area and the other near their hydrotherapy pool. Although these incidents did not result in any serious injuries, they highlighted the potential hazards within the spa. The management decided to proactively address the risks to ensure the safety of their clients and staff, as well as protecting the business from potential liability claims.
Slip Testing
Nationwide Slip Testing was asked to attend site, out of hours, to assess the slip resistance of all of their floors in the spa and for our recommendations to help with any issues raised. Our initial inspection of all areas was to identify potential high risk zones based on their usage and exposure to contamination etc.
Using our Pendulum slip testing machine, multiple tests were conducted on the various flooring materials to BS16165:2021 to quantify the slip resistance in dry and wet/contaminated conditions. The results were then analysed to determine which areas needed immediate attention.
Recommendations
Based on our findings we recommended the cleaning regime be altered to improve the removal of contamination in the shower areas and an anti slip treatment to be applied to certain areas where the slip risk potential was greatly reduced due to the tiles wearing over time.
Retesting
Once our recommendations had been implemented, we returned to carry the retesting of the areas where the previous slip test results had failed and now all areas are at a low slip risk potential and the management and staff are extremely happy with the results.
Summary
After two minor slip incidents, the spa management decided to proactively address the risks to ensure the safety of their clients and staff, as well as protecting the business from potential liability claims.
